About Xavier Castells

I am a clinical researcher and teacher at the School of Medicine at the University of Girona. Since 2018, my primary research focus has been on the study and development of new methods to facilitate automated, personalized, and participatory clinical decision-making. To achieve this goal, I have applied Artificial Intelligence (AI), including machine learning, optimization algorithms, and knowledge representation, to assess the benefit-risk ratio of interventions. My work is primarily focused on treatments for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), drug use disorder, and Alzheimer's disease (AD). Additionally, I have been involved in pharmacoepidemiological studies using case-control and cohort study designs. As an educator, I have taught at both the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and the University of Girona. I am experienced in various teaching methods, including problem-based learning (PBL), workshops, expository lessons, simulated patients, and Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCE). I have also held managerial roles within the School of Medicine, specifically as a head of studies, director of the medical education unit, area coordinator, and quality manager.
