Traffic monitoring is one of the challenges that metropolises are facing. The constant global population growth induces more and more vehicles on road infrastructures, which highlights the importance of tracking and managing vehicular traffic flows. A real-time, high-resolution, and cost-effective solution for traffic monitoring is using the Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) technology. DAS turns standard telecommunication optic cables into an array of vibration sensors, capable of recording those generated by moving vehicles. I am working on processing the collected DAS data, using Machine Learning-based algorithms, to extract useful information about the traffic, such as the speed, number, and type of vehicles.
