About Yana Dimitrova

After completing a Bachelor's in Fine Art and later a Masters in Fine Arts in Painting from the Savannah College of Art and Design, i moved to New York where I continued my focus on Painting. There my focus shifted towards painting and urban practices as linked to community empowerment at the brilliant public art and mural organization Groundswell. Further focusing on my art, design and teaching practice I engaged with the urban field and social theory pertaining to art in public spaces, specifically the ones linked to social Justice in New York City while attending Parsons School of Design at The New School and studying towards an MA of Theories of Urban Practice program. My academic work currently is focused on a practice-based PhD research at LUCA school of arts in Gent and Brussels, Belgium. There, once again my focus is in painting as a tool for community empowerment and visual and embodied storytelling. Amongst the practice and hands on work in the field, I am passionate about teaching in interdisciplinary and empowering for the students ways. I love to center problem solving scenarios, introduce social Justice work in the field, while applying community centric practices as stepping stones in my teaching process.
