About Yaron Eliav

An award-winning Judaic studies scholar, Dr. Yaron Eliav of the University of Michigan's Department of Near Eastern Studies has authored numerous leading works in his field. He has distinguished himself as the author of the “Jerusalem” and “Jews and Judaism” entries for the Oxford Encyclopedia of Ancient Greece and Rome, as well as the “Jews and Judaism 70-429 CE” chapter in A Companion to the Roman Empire. Dr. Yaron Eliav has earned two national awards for his book God's Mountain: The Temple Mount in Time, Place, and Memory, and he is currently at work on a new book that explores the Jewish experience in Roman Palestine, in particular within the institution of the public bathhouse.Dr. Yaron Eliav holds a PhD in ancient Judaism and archaeology from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where he also completed a master's degree program in humanities and was a senior fellow at the university's Institute for Advanced Studies. Subsequently, he was a Fulbright scholar and held a teaching assistant position in the Department of Religion at Princeton University. Currently an associate professor at the University of Michigan, Dr. Eliav teaches several Judaic studies courses that explore the lives of ancient Jewish people in a historical context. His survey course, the Land of Israel/Palestine through the Ages, includes hands-on work at the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology.
