About Ying Chen

I am a chartered (ICE) Geotechnical engineer, and the current Vice-Chair of ISSMGE Technical Committee 206 - Observational Method (TC206). With over 18 years of experience in a wide range of geotechnical design and construction activities for railway infrastructure, urban area basements, and high-rise building foundations. My key skill to date includes finite element modelling (2D & 3D), design of retaining structures for deep excavations, pile foundations, piling construction, and soil data interpretation with a deep understanding of soil small-strain stiffness behaviours. Currently, I am leading the delivery of earthwork renewal projects over portfolio of £60M over 5 years. The Ph.D. research on the observational method for deep excavation design in over-consolidated clay has strengthened my knowledge to provide cost-effective excavation design solutions through Observational Method Approach. The continuing research on the machine learning supported real-time back analysis (RTBA) study and innovation trial for ground engineering projects have shown significant development in data-driven digital design in ground engineering. This also strengthens the application of the Observational Method as a cost-effective, as well as sustainable design approach to improve construction practices in relation to design visualization and construction safety. Observational Method is also applied in Asset Management to control risk, prolong asset design life safety and become the essential element in Infrastructure asset management strategy.
