Background

About Yonas Abraha

Over the last three years, I have created compelling research as well as work experiences in different environments with a great variety of professionals. In Summer 2019, I interned as a research assistant at the University of Washington at their Clear Energy Institute, where I collaborated with a group of students under Dr. David Masiello. In this project, I analyzed and calculated plasmons applications in solar energy. During Summer 2020, I interned at Washington State University under the mentorship of Dr. Robert Catena, where I developed a mobile application that measures the balance of a person to prevent severe falls in elderly and pregnant women. And last summer, I interned at John Deere where I developed and implemented a pile detection software that utilizes the latitude and longitude of a loader to automatically assign a material type. These internships helped me to become more detail-oriented, analytical, and persistent in problem-solving. For the entire duration of the projects, I had to work on a team or sometimes in multiple teams which helped me to understand how to become an effective team player. In addition, I also worked as a tutor at Seattle Central College and volunteered at Seattle Goodwill Education Center. During tutoring, I found a passion for meeting and interacting with new people, and I learned a variety of ways to help students to overcome their academic challenges. My volunteer work taught me to become a more responsible, friendly, and good listener. I also have developed my leadership skills as Vice President of the African Student Association and mentored in the Eritrea Orthodox Church.
