About Yu Saito

I am an experienced software engineer with a broad range of experience—from academic research in experimental condensed matter physics to the industrial development of cutting-edge, AI-based SaaS products. I earned my Ph.D. in Applied Physics from the University of Tokyo, where I focused on 2D superconductivity (with publications in Science in 2015 and Nature Physics in 2016). After a short postdoctoral tenure at RIKEN AIP to expand my research skills, I joined Andrea Young’s group at UC Santa Barbara as an Elings Prize Postdoctoral Fellow. There, I discovered multiple quantum phenomena in twisted bilayer graphene (with publications in Nature in 2021 and in Nature Physics in 2020 and 2021). Subsequently, I joined DATAGRID, and in my current role as CTO, I lead ML/data engineering, product design, and the management of various generative AI SaaS products—particularly those leveraging GAN and diffusion models—built from the ground up, such as the “Anomaly Generator” for the manufacturing industry. My diverse background in natural science, machine learning software engineering, and product management enables me to tackle the challenges and opportunities presented by these interdisciplinary fields. Areas of Expertise Product Development & Management - Developing ML products powered by generative AI in domains like visual inspection and drug discovery. ML Backend Implementation - Designing and implementing backend APIs for machine learning applications. Data Analysis & Engineering - Performing data analysis, data engineering, and feature engineering for ML models. Quantum Physics & Materials Science - Extensive knowledge and experience of nanofabrication techniques and ultra-low temperature measurements (AFM, e-beam lithography, evaporation, dilution refrigerator). Key Achievements Generative AI SaaS Development - Built multiple generative AI SaaS products from scratch, covering team building, ML/data engineering, and product management. Director of Government R&D Project - Directing research and development project for the Generative AI Accelerator Challenge, a program supported by Japan's METI, and project for combatting fake information on the internet as part of a project by Japan's MIC. Academic Research in Condensed Matter Physics - Experimentally uncovered quantum phenomena in ion-gated 2D superconductors (Ph.D. research) and twisted bilayer graphene (postdoctoral research)- Published as first author in top journals such as Nature, Science, and Nature Physicsx3.
