About Yui Matsuda

Dr. Yui Matsuda, PhD, PHNA-BC, MPH, RN, FAAN, is a Professor of Clinical at the University of Miami School of Nursing and Health Studies, where she is passionate about teaching and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students in nursing and public health. She is actively engaged in scholarship related to teaching and improving the health of families in need. Her teaching-related scholarship includes work on problem-based learning, and nursing students’ experiences with simulation and civic engagement. She has a strong collaboration with Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, where she and her team implemented Baby Steps, a program designed to support the transition of care from hospital to home for NICU babies and their families. Baby Steps has successfully reduced readmission rates and emergency department use. Baby Steps has received various recognitions such as the American Academy of Nursing's Edge Runner Award and Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce 2024 Health Care Heroes® Organizations/ Programs Award. Dr. Matsuda has been named a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and received the University of Miami’s Excellence in Civic Engagement Award in recognition of her impactful contributions to nursing and community engagement. Born and raised in Japan, Dr. Matsuda maintains strong ties to her native country and is involved in research and mentorship for Japanese scholars and students. Beyond the classroom, she serves with the Nurse Christian Fellowship International and leading the Japanese Christian Community in Miami with her husband. On weekends, she teaches Japanese and serves as an interpreter of main messages from Spanish to Japanese. She finds joy in supporting the faith journeys of people from multicultural backgrounds. She truly enjoys meeting and connecting with people, and creating unity through a spirit of caring.
