About Yusuke Hatakeyama

A highly experienced and dual-qualified lawyer (attorney at law in Japan and solicitor in England & Wales) and former Japanese diplomat with a decade of specialized expertise in public international law and international economic/investment law, including dispute settlement. Extensive international experience having worked in Tokyo, Singapore, Yangon, Brussels and London. Strong professional experience: Over 5.5 years of practice in three prominent law firms, including two of the top four Japanese firms, and over 5.5 years in key positions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan and the Embassy of Japan in the UK, focusing on public international law, international economic/investment law, economic security and economic sanctions. Strengthening expertise: Currently pursuing Doctor of Law (LL.D) in public international law at the University of Kyoto, Graduate School of Law under supervision of Professor Shotaro Hamamoto (part time doctorate programme) Global recognition: Actively participated in the 58th session of the International Law Seminar from 1 to 19 July 2024 organised by the United Nations Office at Geneva in conjunction with the 75th session of the International Law Commission as one of 27 participants selected from a highly competitive pool of over 200 experts Extensive academic publications and presentations: Published various academic articles and specialized blog posts mainly in international economic law. Delivered academic presentations at prestigious conferences and guest lectures to master and undergraduate students at universities including the University of Oxford, University of Westminster, Ohio State University (USA), and Rikkyo University (Japan)
