My name is Zach Degelau, I am an experienced Site Reliability Engineer with an LFCS/CCNA and have used configuration management for automation with Chef and Ansible and am now studying Kubernetes as well as earning a certification in AWS Cloud. At Nordstrom I was in charge of getting all of our servers in Nordstrom credit on base Chef recipe's. I was motivated to do it so I got the approval and did it. I created 2 base cookbooks, Credit Redhat and Credit Windows to manage our 300+ Linux/Windows servers for our environment. Before I set out on my task the Operations team (Just built) we had little to no idea which teams these servers belonged to at Nordstrom and no monitoring visibility was in place for our team to maintain all of the servers. So I organized our base chef cookbooks to tag each server by VLAN they resided on, tag which team they were from and what processes were running on them. I then set the chef cookbooks to automatically add the correct AD groups to each server and set up sudoers access where appropriate, as well as install utilities like Qualys, Datadog, Splunk and a few other services to make sure everything was being monitored correctly. In Datadog I had it built so it could gather important attributes from Chef and put it in its Yaml file so Datadog monitoring would show a more granular view of what was going on, and set up automated patching. I was also responsible for the F5 BigIP blue green servers that hosted one of our large websites. So I would perform updates as needed and switch between the primary/backup servers. I built firewall diagrams and created jump servers so our team could access these servers individually with Ansible for auditing purposes as well. I enjoy working as part of a team, writing documentation and making customers happy. I am ready to help automate your stack and get into compliance following guidelines on SLI's/SLO's and SLA's while working safely throughout the CI/CD process to ensure Dev/Test/Prod environments are working as expected and better.
