About Zama Dube

Dr. Zama Dube is an interdisciplinary artist-scholar who obtained her PhD in Cinema and Media Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles––where she also taught undergraduate Film Studies. Drawing from her experiential knowledge as a media practitioner, Dr. Dube’s research examines practices of visual dissent by Black women and queer cultural producers in the African diaspora. By orientating towards Black feminisms and queer theories to examine film and photography, Dube’s dissertation project inaugurates an interdisciplinary avenue that offers a methodological intervention that centers Black feminist creative praxis. As a film and media scholar interested in visual archives of an "otherwise", Dr. Dube further draws from her creative practice as a sound artist, pulling from Afro-diasporic sonic landscapes in order to create a Black feminist grammar that seeks to revise the canon to include a decolonial representation of Black life.
