About Zdenko Herceg

As Section and Group Head at International Agency for Research on Cancer/World Health Organization, I lead a multi-faceted research programme on epigenetic mechanisms of carcinogenesis and identification and validation of epigenetic-based biomarkers of environmental exposures and cancer risk. The research conducted by my laboratory takes advantage of state-of-the-art, powerful molecular/cell biology and functional genomics tools, as well as recent progress in understanding of the cancer (epi)genome, development of genomic databases and genomic databases and new bioinformatics tools. Our discoveries contributed to better understanding the molecular mechanisms underpinning carcinogenesis, providing critical information for the development of novel epigenetics-based strategies for cancer prevention, early detection and treatment.
