About Ziah Sumar

My belief in giving back to the community has grown from the legal, religious and women’s rights arenas. I have volunteered for the Organization for Refuge, Asylum & Migration in San Francisco and acted as lead board member with the regional disaster management team for Focus Canada. I have also been co-president of BELIEF (Becoming Educated Leaders Inspired by Exemplary Females), a platform where women can discuss issues in a safe and open environment. I am also on the list of volunteer lawyers with the Refugee Sponsorship Support Program, as well as a Working Group volunteer with the Canadian Bar Association’s Immigration Section. I earned my Bachelor of Arts Honours degree in business law from Carleton University and then went on to the University of Ottawa where I graduated with my Juris Doctor law degree. I have been involved in both Canada’s legal, and immigration communities in many respects. I have argued in Federal Court, as well as the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada; I have conducted a variety of presentations on all areas of immigration and citizenship, and have been responsible for managing the immigration planning and issues of large international corporations, while also standing as the Citizenship and Immigration Lead for the Settlement Portfolio of the Ismaili Council For Ontario, and for the National Settlement Portfolio of the Ismaili Council for Canada.
