About Zuri Hightower
My name is Zuri Hightower and I am a recent graduate of Howard University with a B.S. in Psychology and a passion for advancing mental and physical health equity through research. I am currently a first-year Postbaccalaureate IRTA Fellow at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH), working in Dr. Miroslav “Misha” Bačkonja’s lab. Our research combines psychophysics, neuroimmunology, and clinical trials to investigate pain mechanisms and evaluate both pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic therapies. Using ecological momentary assessment (EMA), patient-reported outcomes (PROs), and quantitative sensory testing (QST), we study how pain unfolds in daily life, how individuals perceive sensory stimuli, and how coping strategies affect quality of life. These experiences align with my broader commitment to advancing public health, innovation, and evidence-based practices through research.
