No dia 3 de agosto de 2001, suas atividades acadêmicas tiveram início e, em 30 de junho de 2005, foi realizada a formatura da sua primeira turma, com 7.150 alunos do curso Normal Superior do Programa de Formação de Professores (Proformar)- um projeto vencedor do prêmio Objetivos do Milênio e apontado pela Organização das Nações Unidas para a Educação, a Ciência e a Cultura (Unesco) como modelo a ser seguido por outros países. A UEA possui mais de 20 mil estudantes regularmente matriculados na graduação e, também, na pós-graduação. É a maior universidade multicampi do País, ou seja, é a instituição de ensino superior brasileira com o maior número de unidades que integram a sua composição. Além dos cursos de graduação, sendo esses Bacharelados, Licenciaturas e Tecnológicos, a Universidade também concentra esforços para ampliar a oferta de Pós-Graduação nas mais diversas áreas de pesquisa.
