Com os craques do bairro diluídos por três times, a Vila Tibério não contava com um representante que fizesse frente aos outros clubes da cidade, como o Comercial, o Operário, o Itália, o Atlântico e o Força e Coragem. Para reverter essa situação, um grupo ligado ao Ideal F.C. convidou representantes dos outros dois times de Vila Tibério para discutirem a possibilidade de uma fusão, buscando o apoio de todos os moradores do bairro em torno de apenas um clube. Depois de consumada a união entre os três times, faltava escolher o nome do novo clube. Diz a lenda que depois de muita discussão e confusão, sem que se chegasse a nenhuma conclusão, um dos diretores declarou que botaria fogo em todos os documentos e que a fusão das equipes seria desfeita. A ameaça incendiária do dirigente acabou ajudando na escolha do nome. Nas primeiras décadas do século, o Botafogo do Rio de Janeiro era um dos clubes mais famosos do Brasil e todos concordaram em homenagear o time carioca na hora de batizar a nova associação.
