The LASD annual budget is approximately $2.5 billion dollars. The LASD is the policing agency for 130 unincorporated communities within the square miles of the County of Los Angeles. As the largest contract policing agency in the nation, the LASD is the sole policing agency for 42 of 88 cities in LA County, 10 community colleges, and over one million daily commuters of Metrolink and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority trains and buses. Over 4 million people are directly protected by the LASD. The LASD also protects 42 Superior Courts and 600 bench officers. Moreover, the Department manages the nation's largest local jail system with a housing capacity of nearly inmates. The Sheriff of Los Angeles County is the Director of Homeland Security-Mutual Aid for California Region I, which includes the County of Orange.
