BACKLIT is an independent public gallery and cultural organisation based in Nottingham, founded in 2008 by local graduates. Looking for a space to hire? Our three-storey gallery is housed in a historic Victorian building and home to over 120 artists, collectives, and associate members. Over the past 14 years, we’ve delivered more than 100 national and international exhibitions and built a reputation for bold, inclusive, and socially engaged programming. Our free year-round events include workshops, talks, screenings, and original artist commissions. As a female-led and LGBTQ+ organisation, we prioritise equity, inclusion, mental health, environmental awareness, and being a safe space for all. BACKLIT is a registered charity (No. 1167258) and an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation.
