Blantyre Water Board

Blantyre Water Board is a parastatal organization established and reconstituted under the Malawi Water Works Act No. 17 of 1995 to supply potable water for commercial, industrial, institutional and domestic use in the supply area of Blantyre City and surrounding areas. Its mission is to provide reliable and affordable water supply services to customers whilst effectively contributing to the development of the national economy and sustenance of the environment. BWB extracts its water from Shire River (an outlet of Lake Malawi) at Walker’s Ferry about 40 kilometres away and 800m below Blantyre City. As BWB’s main treatment plant, it provides water to about 85% of Blantyre City’s population of 1.4 million for domestic, institutional, commercial and industrial purposes from a daily production of litres. BWB also has Mudi Treatment Works which produces about litres daily. Blantyre Water Board supplies water to Blantyre City and other surrounding areas that include Bvumbwe, Chileka, Lunzu, Chiradzulu, Limbe and Mapanga. BWB has four broad categories of customers namely; domestic, industrial, institutional and commercial customers. Currently BWB has about customers. BWB registers an average of 87 connections every month. Currently, there are four physical pay-points currently in use and these are; Chichiri Shopping Mall opposite PUMA Filling Station, Limbe Zone Offices in Limbe (within CEAR Offices), Peoples Supermarket in Blantyre and Kameza Roundabout. Customers can also pay their bills through National Bank of Malawi,First Merchant Bank,NBS Bank, Ecobank and Standard Bank.
