Hoard

Hoard is a platform that aims to disrupt the video game industry by enabling true ownership of virtual items and downloadable content using blockchain technology. In 2017, sales of virtual goods raked in more than USD$80 billion of the gaming industry’s total revenue of $103 billion (IDG Consulting, March 2017 Report). The top five grossing games that year were free-to-play, a model which generates income from sales of in-game content. Yet, gamers do not truly own the content that they have purchased. Publishers place strict qualifications on what users can do with these items with EULAs (End User License Agreements) and they have the power to change the terms of service, freeze players accounts or even shut the whole marketplace down. The Hoard platform will facilitate 3 main things: 1) True ownership of virtual content for gamers 2) A new model of game financing for developers 3) Development of a virtual goods marketplace and new opportunities for ‘virtual employment’ By providing infrastructure for game developers to tokenize all aspects of their games on a blockchain, Hoard will enable gamers to finally own the items they pay real money for. They can buy, sell and even rent out their virtual pocessions at will, inside and outside of the Hoard marketplace. Additionally, the Hoard platform offers an alternative way of crowd funding games by inviting funders to contribute in return for valuable virtual items and allowing them to participate in the economies of the games.
