Maran Winery
The origins of Maran date back to 1828-30 when Sargis and his wife Maran repatriated from Persia to the Armenian province of Vayots Dzor. Sargis’s son expanded the vineyard his parents had planted and called it Marani as a tribute to his mother. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the descendants of the family revitalized the traditions, launching the first commercial wines under Maran brand. The head of the company is considered one of the forefathers of modern Armenian winemaking and has extensively worked on the concept of Armenian terroir for many years, promoting indigenous Armenian varieties. The company nowadays owns 6 ha of vineyards in the Vayots Dzor province, which sells the wines in the local market as well as exports to Europe and Russia. The wine brands include Noravank, Bagratuni, Malahi and the latest one, Halde the underwater aged wine. And so, after almost 200 years the traditions of Maran winemaking still thrive and are encapsulated in these wines.
