Have you ever driven for miles and then said to yourself in a surprised tone,"Oh, I'm just about there!" How often do we drive as if on "auto pilot", not noticing a thing. While driving, we are "lost in thought." There is nothing wrong with "auto pilot"- we seem to spend much of our time in this mode. It is just that we miss the moment-to-moment richness of our lives. We also seem prone to overreacting and having our "buttons pushed" while in auto pilot. The purpose of MBSR training (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction) is to learn how to move from "auto pilot" to "manual", which provides us with greater awareness, freedom and control.
