Small short term restricted grants from donors have caused more harm than good in Africa. 90% of African NGOs have not grown between years 2019 and 2020. The industry norms of how grants by institutional donors and foundations skews the impact that African NGOs can deliver and perpetuates a dependency culture which hasn't really helped anyone. Main challenges are around anchoring on historical giving to determine future giving, lack of investments in capacity and just a focus on program outcomes. Other challenges are exclusionary grant making criteria that is western centric which has emphasized on topics such as scale in breath and not depth and favouring larger organisations to smaller organisations. There is a general perception that African NGOs lack the ability to manage funds, and will tend to be corrupt resulting to a trust deficit which most donors address through very short term small budget restricted funding or a fund management vehicle through an international organisation. MoFund is changing this narrative by:>Investing in capacity of African NGOs to attract better trust based grants >Polling funds from African philanthropists and helping them build a pipeline of African NGOs that have a track record in areas of their interest.>Investing in locally led social and sustainable start ups
