Children's Investment Fund Foundation Ciff
The Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF) is an independent philanthropic organisation, with offices in Addis Ababa, Beijing, London, Nairobi and New Delhi. CIFF works with a wide range of partners seeking to transform and empower the lives of children in developing countries, with the ultimate goal of solving seemingly intractable challenges to ensure all children have the chance to survive and thrive. CIFF aims to play a catalytic role as a funder and influencer to deliver urgent and systemic change at scale. Areas of work include empowering adolescents to control their sexual and reproductive health and to avoid unwanted pregnancies and HIV/AIDS; improving children and mothers’ health and nutrition and increasing deworming efforts to break transmission for good; and seeking an equitable world for girls and young women. CIFF’s climate portfolio is driven by a vision of a climate-safe future for today’s children and future generations that also bears the benefits of cleaner air, energy security and sustainable jobs. CIFF’s child protection work focuses on ending child labour and sexual exploitation by enabling an environment that reduces vulnerability of communities and safeguards children. The Foundation places significant emphasis on quality data and evidence. For most of its grants, CIFF works with partners to measure and evaluate progress to achieve large-scale and sustainable impact. The organisation is committed to sharing as much information as possible about what they and their partners are learning. Founded in 2002, CIFF employs over 130 professionals in China, Ethiopia, India, Kenya, and the UK. CIFF strives to couple business acumen and principles with development experience and best practices to transform the landscape for children. It seeks to be the gold standard in grant making and foundation operations. For more information please visit

Rafiki Wa Maendeleo Trust
Rafiki wa Maendeleo Trust is a charitable organization working in the rural area of Rarieda sub-County in Siaya County, Kenya. Our vision is people believing in themselves and working together to build a vibrant and progressive community. Our mission is to empower communities and build their capacities to create positive change for children and youth within their community. Rafiki started as a community development founded by the Director Michele Ostertag and her two friends, Monica and Solomon Ochieng. Touched by the hardships faced by children and villagers, the founding friends began with health treatment and education to the villagers. During the first two years, it became increasingly clear that given the socio-economic hardships of the area, one could not focus on treatment of diseases alone. In September 2003, the initiative was registered as a Community Based organization called Lusi Community Orphans Project. The CBO emphasized self-help through income generating initiatives such as chicken and dairy farming, beekeeping and crafts. The profits from these ventures were used to support up to 83 orphaned children with breakfast, school uniforms and weekend psycho-social activities. In 2006 the group decided that a stronger organizational structure and a more robust legal framework was required in order to grow the project into a professional organization. The Lusi Community Orphans Project was therefore reconstituted into Rafiki wa Maendeleo Trust, which officially began operating in June 2006. Currently, Rafiki wa Maendeleo Trust works alongside children, youth, and adults to realize its vision that people believe in themselves and work together to build a vibrant and progressive community. Nearly Rarieda residents are touched annually by one of the following program areas: Health, Advocacy and Rights, Education and Economic Empowerment.

Africa Public Health Foundation
The Africa Public Health Foundation exists to forge partnerships that advance the Africa CDC’s life-saving work, strengthen public health systems and improve health outcomes for more than 1 billion people across the Continent. OUR STORY The Africa Public Health Foundation is an independent charitable foundation, created by the African Union to mobilise philanthropic and private-sector resources to support the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention’s critical health work across the continent. Together with leading philanthropists and partners from within Africa and across the world, we are ensuring that African health systems can meet the needs of over one billion citizens. Based in Nairobi and founded by African health leaders, the Foundation was established in 2019, just weeks before the COVID-19 crisis began to unfold. The pandemic that since took hold has shown us all that a weakness in any national health system is a risk to us globally. The Africa CDC, as a technical institution of the African Union, has the mandate from Member States to strengthen health systems across the Continent, based on national plans and priorities. But we know that we cannot do this alone. Ambitious partnerships from across the public, private and philanthropic sectors in Africa and beyond must be forged to develop practical solutions, and drive innovation to address existing and emerging challenges including emergency preparedness and response, prevention, and treatment of communicable and non-communicable diseases, and healthcare workforce training and development. JOIN US Your support to the Foundation saves lives in Africa and strengthens our collective resilience.

Mofund Africa
Small short term restricted grants from donors have caused more harm than good in Africa. 90% of African NGOs have not grown between years 2019 and 2020. The industry norms of how grants by institutional donors and foundations skews the impact that African NGOs can deliver and perpetuates a dependency culture which hasn't really helped anyone. Main challenges are around anchoring on historical giving to determine future giving, lack of investments in capacity and just a focus on program outcomes. Other challenges are exclusionary grant making criteria that is western centric which has emphasized on topics such as scale in breath and not depth and favouring larger organisations to smaller organisations. There is a general perception that African NGOs lack the ability to manage funds, and will tend to be corrupt resulting to a trust deficit which most donors address through very short term small budget restricted funding or a fund management vehicle through an international organisation. MoFund is changing this narrative by:>Investing in capacity of African NGOs to attract better trust based grants >Polling funds from African philanthropists and helping them build a pipeline of African NGOs that have a track record in areas of their interest.>Investing in locally led social and sustainable start ups
