Moore Math Geniuses

Black children do not have a learning gap. The adults have a belief gap - they don't believe most Black children can be successful in math, the same way that they may believe in White children or Asian children’s ability to excel in mathematics. It is EXPECTED that Asian children will be "good" at mathematics. There is evidence that supports the fact that African people gave the world mathematics and many other innovations in STEM – and Black children need to know that they stand on the shoulders of giants. If they are given the same exposure and shown how people from the continent of Africa were the pioneers of mathematic concepts, and that many Black inventors made contributions that were erased from the records of history, they will see their connection to that brilliance and realize their opportunity to be successful in STEM subjects as well, especially mathematics. Many teachers of subjects such as mathematics, chemistry, physics and biology are under the impression that mathematics is a non-cultural subject. It is clear, however, that mathematics is not a culture-free discipline. All cultures are rich in artifacts that exhibit mathematical concepts, however, those cultural connections are not often made in traditional classrooms. The impact is detrimental for students who have no understanding or connection with their culture’s contribution and participation in these disciplines. The Black Math Genius program is intentional about teaching these contributions and bringing and helping each student bring out their inner math genius. There are three areas we get right that will help students increase their math performance on high stakes assessments while also increasing their interest in STEM fields: 1. The curriculum stems from an African-centered pedagogy; 2. The curriculum makes sure that mathematical concepts are relevant and application based; and 3.
