Many Cambodians have a communication or swallowing disorder, which has a huge impact on their quality of life. Yet there are few services to help them. OIC Cambodia is going to change that in three ways: 1 – by providing training in speech therapy across Cambodia 2 – by advocating at every level of community and government for speech therapy 3 – by establishing a speech therapy program at a university. We do not directly provide speech therapy services. Rather, we are establishing speech therapy as a profession in Cambodia, to ensure there are Cambodian speech therapists within the country that can offer comprehensive and sustainable speech therapy services. Currently, we are focusing on a training program for teachers, health professionals and government officials. Educating teachers will better integrate students with communication and swallowing disorders into their classrooms. Educating health professionals will help people with communication and swallowing disorders be more accurately diagnosed and treated.
