Purifungi

Cigarette butts are the most present waste in the environment. However, no recycling system exists in Belgium. PuriFungi takes up the challenge! Analyzing how Nature learnt to deal with pollution, we observe that fungi are not only the best recyclers but also the best cleaning-up natural system for organic and inorganic pollutants. PuriFungi uses these species as a model: through a biological method of mycoremediation, cigarette butts are cleaned-up and transformed into a new bio-material. The technique is patented by PuriFungi since 2019. To ensure circularity, PuriFungi is making ashtrays out of the combination of fungi-butts depolluted. We are also producing construction materials and designed objects out of the treated butts. Merging Science, Ecology and Design, the primary mission of PuriFungi is to fight against environmental pollution through innovative and sustainable technology.
