A rendition of Mark Twain’s quote: “The two most important days of a person’s life: the day they were born and the day they find out why.” Every person has a calling. My favorite definition of calling: purpose with a divine touch. Why am I here and what am I supposed to do with my life? One of my favorite life vision exercises is to reduce your life vision to one word, then two words, then three words, then four, and finally five. What are your words? Here are mine. One word vision for Derek Daniel Guajardo’s life: Communication. Two word vision: Communicate positively. Three words: Communicate to benefit. Four words: Speak, coach, write, lead. Five words: Speak, Coach, Write, Lead, Life. Now you know my life vision in only five words. My life vision, then, captures a purpose for every activity in schedule. Why do I work out? To lead life with my example. Why do I give dynamic presentations to corporations, organizations, small groups, churches, and students? To speak life into people. Why do I connect with people one-on-one to help them realize the power, potential, value, importance, love, worth, intelligence, and freedom that already dwells within them? To coach life into people. Why do I write articles to help marriages, careers, and relationships? To write life into marriages, careers, and people. Why pray, volunteer, think uplifting thoughts, read, memorize, sing, enjoy, relax, romance my wife? To lead life. I think you get the idea. For the last 15 years, people in a variety of leadership roles have requested that I speak. When I started out, I wasn’t good, but I was passionate. Initially, I did not realize I had anything special to offer; I assumed everybody is asked to speak and when I was asked, I figured it was my turn. Along the way, people requested that I speak in corporate settings, small group settings, large audiences of 800+ settings, prison settings, wedding settings, funeral settings, student settings, church settings, and family settings.
