The Litus Foundation

The Litus Foundation is a registered charity, formed expressly to slow climate change. It is devising new technologies, campaigning for energy efficiency, and advocating for a new 'citizens' climate agency. Litus' is developing super-efficient uncooled internal combustion engines (ICEs) of around tripled-efficiency, for all applications and fuels, including green fuels such as hydrogen. They do not exist yet; apparently only Litus is working on this. It is one of the few projects that would quickly slow global heating. Once available, it is highly likely that uncooled engines would almost completely replace today's cooled engines, cutting man-made CO2 by about 20% within a decade or so, 30% if largely using green fuels. Between 35% and 40% of man-made CO comes from all ICEs used in vehicles, ships, electricity generation, rail, industrial / agricultural equipment. Piston engines dissipate (waste) 30% to 50% of fuel energy via air- or water-based cooling systems and general radiation. Today, this is unsustainable. Uncooled engines will run at very high pressures and temperatures, enabling more fuel energy to push the piston, with the rest held in the much hotter exhaust gas where it can be used to do more mechanical work and increase performance, using current exhaust heat energy recovery technology. Pistons and cylinders of industrial ceramic are in thermally / acoustically insulating casings. With no plumbing for cooling or for piston-cylinder oil systems, engines can be ’snap-in’ cartridges. Equipment no longer needs to be towed to a repair facility; engines can be replaced on site, a game changer. A commercialization Alliance is due to be established by mid-year, to which Litus will hand off the project, its staff and IP. Alliance participants are being recruited, including financial entities, research institutions, large users of engines, vehicle and component manufacturers.
