Emec European Marine Energy Centre
Established in 2003, EMEC is the world’s first and leading facility for demonstrating and testing wave and tidal energy converters – technologies that generate electricity by harnessing the power of waves and tidal streams – in the sea. EMEC is accredited as a test laboratory (ISO/IEC 17025) and inspection body (ISO/IEC 17020). We offer purpose-built, open-sea testing facilities for prototype technologies, attracting developers from around the globe to prove what is achievable in some of the harshest marine environments while in close proximity to sheltered waters and harbours. To date, more ocean energy converters have tested at EMEC than at any other site in the world. EMEC is best known for our work in ocean energy development, however our operations have developed significantly through the years as we’ve gained unprecedented experience in demonstrating ocean energy technologies, and providing technical and business support to our clients. Today we’re also pioneering the development of a green hydrogen economy in Orkney, and have set up a hydrogen production plant onshore, next to the Fall of Warness substation. We’re now working on projects to support the development of floating offshore wind, hydrogen, e-fuels, clean energy systems and island decarbonisation. EMEC has also hosted a subsea data centre designed by Microsoft on our Billia Croo test site demonstrating the versatility of our infrastructure.

Faradion Limited
Faradion is pioneering the next generation of advanced, low-cost battery materials. These novel materials employ sodium-ion (Na-ion) technology which, when incorporated into batteries, will be virtually indistinguishable from the leading products currently on the market in terms of performance; they are however available at a fraction of the cost. In addition to the significant cost reduction, these next-generation materials are manufactured using more sustainable materials, since sodium is far more abundant than lithium and its salts are easier to obtain. By bringing low-cost, state-of-the-art Na-ion technology to the market, the Faradion team is accelerating the introduction of emerging technologies such as stationary storage (on and off grid) and electric vehicles. With its headquarters at the Innovation Centre in Sheffield, Faradion has gathered a team of experts in the battery industry, with an impressive array of skills and experience.
