The Real Uganda

The Real Uganda brings funding and skills to locally-led development initiatives Uganda. Founded in 2005, it is a legally registered non-profit, non-governmental organization (NGO), operating totally in Uganda. We place about 150 international volunteers each year. We award small grants amounting to about each year. The Real Uganda is different from the other volunteer placement organizations. We introduce volunteers to the beauty and complexity of Ugandan life. We enable volunteers to build relationships with ordinary Ugandans working hard to improve our society. We focus on what Uganda has to offer its people, and look for ways to improve access to it. The communities we work with want to learn from international volunteers. They also want to show off their own knowledge and traditions. Ideas and cultures are exchanged and appreciated in true collaboration. Volunteers offer their time, and learn about our way of life, through: • teaching in primary schools; • developing youth sport programs; • assisting in rural public health initiatives; • maintaining organic farms; and • supporting women's empowerment groups All our placements are run by local community leaders. All our volunteers work directly with motivated Ugandans, empowered to improve their lives - on their terms.
