UMR Selmet Mediterranean and Tropical Livestock Systems) generates knowledge to support sustainable transitions of family livestock farms in Mediterranean and tropical areas. It focuses in particular on pastoral farming and mixed crop-livestock farms. In Mediterranean and tropical regions, ruminant farmers are faced with specific constraints in terms of access to fodder resources. They also must cope with significant economic,ecological and social changes. Our task is to understand, assess and accompany these transformations. Our aim is to reinforce the vital role of livestock in rural communities, in the supply of markets, and in the planning and management of agricultural and pastoral areas. Selmet is developing a systemic approach to livestock activities to analyze the dynamics of these livestock farms and support their transition. The aim us to undertake work at different scales, from the animal to the territory. This means promoting complementarity between "integrative" approaches that place livestock in their environment and "bio-technical" approaches that analyze the components of livestock systems. Selmet brings together agents from the following five research and education institutions - CIRAD, the French agricultural research and international cooperation INRAE, the National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food and Institut Agro-Montpellier, a French public institution devoted to higher education and research in Agriculture, Food and Environment
