Un-Habitat Sdg Localization

Localizing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) means turning global goals into real improvements in people’s daily lives. It’s about aligning national and local priorities, using data for smart investments, and empowering local leaders to act. Localization is the opportunity for governments, stakeholders, development partners, and the UN system to move beyond one-off projects toward inclusive, multistakeholder processes that promote systemic change at the local level. In UN-Habitat’s 2026-2029 Strategic Plan, SDG localization and participatory multilevel governance are central to achieving universal access to adequate housing, effective land management, and equitable urban services. Working hand-in-hand with local and national governments, UN-Habitat helps design policies and deliver services that respond to real community needs, creating an impact loop where local action drives national progress and global transformation. Our work spans three interconnected levels: Global: As co-chair of the Local2030 Coalition, UN-Habitat advances local and regional engagement in UN processes, guided by tools like the Bilbao Blueprint and the SDG Localization Marker to enhance coherence and accountability across the system. National: Through the Partnership Platform on Localizing the SDGs, jointly promoted with the Italian Ministry of Environment and Energy Security, we support national governments to design National SDG Localization Frameworks and close the local financing gap through innovative policy, governance, and investment solutions. Local: Through the @SDG Cities Initiative, UN-Habitat strengthens local capacities in data, planning, and investment, helping cities move from strategy to impact. Tools like Voluntary Local Reviews (VLRs) enable cities to track progress and turn policies into tangible results. Together, these efforts create a continuous cycle of learning and impact, transforming the SDGs from global ambition to local reality.
