Up - Urban Practice

Urban Practice (UP) is a Macau-based practice that operates in the contemporary city within the fields of architecture, urban planning and design. It was founded by Nuno Soares in 2014 after more than ten years of professional experience as an architect in Macau. The projects developed at Urban Practice encompass different scales and themes, from buildings of various sizes and nature to public space, urban plans, heritage renovation, cultural facilities, commercial venues, housing, installations and exhibitions, furniture and product design. Immersed in the urban context, Urban Practice has the city as its inspiration, embracing its problems and conditions as opportunities to discover innovative solutions that can shape the future urban environment. The practice thrives in a collaborative atmosphere that promotes a constant creative interaction between the team, the clients, and the associate companies, individuals and institutions. The results are concept-oriented projects devised as a contribution to the construction of the contemporary city. UP is an award-winning office with a talented multicultural team, developing a complete range of services in architectural design, interior design, building engineering, urban planning and project management. It is based in Macau, with international projects in the Greater Bay, Asia and Europe. It is about to open its second office in Lisbon, Portugal, to expand its operation to Europe. Urban Practice is committed to developing projects exploring local idiosyncrasies, positively impacting its surroundings. Urban Practice’s principal, Nuno Soares, was the winner of the competition for the design and curatorship of the Macau Pavilion at the 2013 and 2015 SZHK Bi-city Biennale of Urbanism/Architecture (Shenzhen) and was selected to participate at the 2014 Venice Biennale of Architecture with the installation “The Added Layer” in the Macau pavilion. He is the coordinator of the Open House Macau.
