Urban Ocean
Our mission is to utilize low-trophic species to deliver an environmental service that addresses a pressing issue in Oslofjorden, which is heavily impacted by elevated nutrient levels such as phosphorus and nitrogen. These conditions have led to the proliferation of annual filamentous algae, resulting in reduced visibility and oxygen levels, subsequently leading to a decline in native species like coastal cod and sugar kelp. This problem is largely a consequence of human activities, including agricultural runoff, coastal development, and municipal wastewater discharge. Our solution involves cultivating blue mussels, kelp, and tunicates on simple rope-based structures with suitable substrates that can be deployed at existing private and public dock facilities. In doing so, excess nutrients and particles will be absorbed. Over time, this approach will enhance environmental conditions in the fjord, reduce eutrophication, and contribute to the restoration of marine biodiversity. Our concept is designed as a complementary measure in the effort to restore Oslofjorden.
