WET was formed in 2003. They take low-value, weak Pinus radiata and turn it into a trademarked “optimized engineered lumber” (OEL) that can replace steel and concrete as a sustainable and high-performing building material in medium and high-density and commercial building applications. Their first full-scale plant is fully established in Gisborne. It is the most advanced industry 4.0 plant in Australasia (automated with robotics) and has been developed in partnership with Callaghan Innovation, Trust Tairawhiti and various partners including Kānoa. It is a model of sustainability and innovation for Aotearoa. Each plant is designed to produce enough product to build 1500 homes a year.
