ASA, short for Active Social Architecture, represents the belief and commitment to the social value of architecture. The young practice, based in Kigali, Rwanda, is the first step of a collaborative network aimed at bringing together a multidisciplinary team across different fields and continents. Design is approached in a holistic manner and seeks to add value to community-based projects both in Rwanda and abroad. In order to have a strong base developed, each and every project is rooted on a research by design, based in findings that come up from the same communities, the vernacular architecture and an intense research of precedents and context. The ensuing process is a constant interaction of stakeholders’ participation, architectural practice and research.

African Design Centre

The African Design Centre is a two-year fellowship program to train and empower the creative leaders who will design a more equitable, just and sustainable Africa. The program, launched as a subsidiary in close collaboration with international nonprofit architecture firm MASS Design Group, will give fellows the training and hands-on experience required to execute social impact driven solutions to the continent’s most pressing challenges. The core of the program is an immersive design-build project, where fellows learn the ADC pedagogy that includes Community Engagement, Design, Construction, and Evaluation. This is paired with classroom-based curriculum and research in emerging issues such as urbanization, affordable housing, and climate change. This program is open to recent university graduates with a Bachelor’s Degree in a design-related field, such as Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Urbanism, Engineering, or Industrial Design. The school is committed to recruiting the very best candidates, and a fellow’s ability to pay tuition is not a factor in admissions decisions. Scholarships and other financial aid is available to ensure every admitted fellow can attend regardless of background.
