Island6 Arts Center
Liu Dao (pinyin: Liù dǎo) is a Shanghai-based art collective of tech-geeks and creative talents driven by innovation and interaction. The collective produces cutting-edge art that constantly contemplates the future of Asia, engages sights and scenes from old and new China, and elevates the skills of new talents by working from a communal forum. Liu Dao's art is visual, interactive, conceptual, humorous, and somber - but always striking, always involving fresh takes on modern technology, and always the product of collaboration. The group places emphasis on interaction in order to engage artists, curators and technicians in the process of creating and experiencing art focusing on collective rather than individual values, with the direct aim of benefiting a young Chinese contemporary art scene promotionally and creatively. An appealing comparison is to the film industry: the island6 gallery acts as the producer for the artists (actors), curators (film directors), while utilizing the skills of cameramen, set designers, choreographers, scenographers, and writers. The digital artworks produced by island6 also use post-production editors, such as Affect Effect experts or sound designers. Each artwork and exhibition has a cast with credits for people of different skills. The art collective is sponsored by island6 Arts Center, an art gallery and production studio in Shanghai’s Moganshan Road art district, M50. The Arts Center provides all materials and hires the necessary skilled labor or technicians to assist art production. At island6, all the work exhibited is made on site and specifically for the theme of a trimestral show.

Fq Projects
FQ Projects specializes in promoting and developing young contemporary artists. Located in Huai Hai Fang, one of the most famous cultural lanes in Shanghai. Once favoured by the Shanghai bourgeois class, many well-known cultural figures lived here during the 1920’s and 30’s, including Ba Jin, Xu Guangping, Xu Beihong and Hu Die. This has created a rich cultural atmosphere in the lane. This area has always been one of the representative places for Shanghai culture. Although after the cultural revolution the prestigious area codes were diluted within Shanghai, one can still feel the coziness and humanity which reflect the original Shanghai ‘sentiments’ in Huai Hai Fang. This contrasts with the modern match boxes and concrete jungle that sit just outside, on Huai Hai Lu. FQ stands in stark contrast to the drift for Chinese contemporary art to be displayed in warehouse style galleries, following the American and North European trend, often set in a few hundred square meters or even thousands. The works follow “the bigger the better” mentality, and exaggeration and overstatement has become the mainstream. FQ Projects features artwork that is high in quality, with an emphasis on significance and humanity. Framing them within a real living space and neighborhood scenario, FQ aims to promote and support those thoughtful artworks and artists who differ from the mainstream. This is not only to fill the niche of the restless Chinese contemporary art and fast-food life style, but also to carry on the tradition of ‘small but delicate’ Shanghai culture.
