Great Domaines
Great Domaines was established in when it first started importing fine wine from a handful of top domaines in Burgundy, France. The organization is completely focused on importing domaines that are at the top of the qualitative scale in their respective fine wine regions. The personal relationships with the various domaines are the backbone to the success of the business as a large portion of the wine, especially the Burgundy, is very hard to obtain elsewhere in the fine wine market. As a result at least one trip each year takes place to visit our producers and maintain these relationships, which is essential. The first wine officially imported by Great Domaines was the vintage from Burgundy domaine, Jacques-Frederic Mugnier. In the beginning 6 domaines were imported regularly and now the Burgundy portfolio has 24 domaines. Excluding Burgundy the rest of the portfolio is driven by the same philosophy of establishing direct, personal relationships with great domaines in various fine wine regions in Europe and importing their wines every year. The thinking since Great Domaines’ inception has been to focus on giving wine-lovers in South Africa the opportunity to buy and drink fine wine from some of the most revered domaines in Europe and provide a window into what makes these people and their wines so special. Our wines are all stored in a temperature-controlled cellar at 10° C.

De Grendel Wines
Few places on earth offer such a spectacular outlook. Nestled atop Tygerberg Hill, surveying its surrounds with unparalleled 270 degrees panoramics, De Grendel showcases Table Mountain, the city of Cape Town and the seaboard all in one landscape. Just 20 minutes from the city, this dramatic expanse of land offers perspective and accessibility. De Grendel means “the latch” in Dutch – this farm was historically the gateway on the route to the inland settlements of Durbanville and Stellenbosch which had to be opened to traverse the Tygerberg. Our distinctive position: Perfectly situated on high, sea-facing slopes, it is the only vineyard in the country that is 350m above sea level and only 7 km from the sea. This elevated position is not only majestic, but also forms an integral part of the micro-climate that shapes our elegant wines. Our vines benefit from the western-facing aspect and the close moderating effects of the ocean – advantages that are the product of the site. In our viticulture and wine-making, our goal is the expression of the character of this distinctive position.

He’s a geologist, she’s an economist – together this husband and wife team is a phenomenon. Gary’s parents, Ted and Sheelagh, bought the 146-hectare Stellenbosch property in 1982, and embarked on an extensive replanting programme, specializing in classic varieties suited to the different soils and slopes. Cederberg Private Cellar is the "highest above sea level" wine farm in the Cape Winelands in South Africa. At 1 036 metres above sea level these grapes ripen very slowly. The farm is surrounded by 183 hectres of pure nature. The farm does not spray for any diseases because it is a virus free area. For five generations the Nieuwoudts have farmed the land and for three they have been making wine.
