Fondazione Edmund Mach ( FEM ) gets the prestigious knowledge heritage of Istituto Agrario di San Michele all’Adige (IASMA), founded in 1874. Its main focuses are education, research, services and technology transfer. FEM promotes and carries out research, scientific experiments, education and training activities as well as providing technical assistance and services to companies. These activities are aimed at promoting cultural and socio-economic growth in the agricultural sector and at developing the forestry and agro-alimentary systems, with particular regard for the environment and the safeguard of the territory of the Trentino region. FEM owns a Farm, wich consists of around 120 hectares of land cultivated with grapevines and apple trees, a wine cellar and a distillery. Biogem is an Italian no-profit private research Institute located in Ariano Irpino (AV), in the South of Italy. Biogem has a long-standing expertise in cellular and molecular biology, and genetics, mainly focused on Oncology and Nephrology fields. The Ri.MED Foundation was established in 2006 with an international partnership between the Italian Government, the Region of Sicily, the Italian National Research Council (CNR), the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). The Foundation, based in Palermo, promotes, supports and leads biomedical and biotechnological research projects, with emphasis on the translation of innovative results into clinical practice. The Foundation is currently focused on the creation of the Biomedical Research and Biotechnology Centre, which will be a reference point for researchers from all over the world, placing Sicily at the avant-garde of the biomedical and biotechnological research field, growing faster and faster. At the same time, the Foundation trains brilliant researchers who will provide the human capital of the Research Centre: the post-doc researchers selected for the Ri.MED Research Fellowship, are based at the University of Pittsburgh or at European centres of excellence; other researchers and technicians work in the Regenerative Medicine and Biomedical Technologies Unit, IRCCS ISMETT, in Palermo. The Foundation’s work also receives significant impetus from the success in obtaining financing for research.
