CellDEG GmbH was founded 2016 and is a spin-off from the Institute of Biology at the Humboldt University of Berlin. Members of the former Cell Biology group headed by Prof. Dr. Rudolf Ehwald developed the High-Density Cultivation (HDC) process for optimal CO2 and light supply of cyanobacteria and microalgae. Compared to classical culture methods, the productivity of photoautotrophic microorganisms can thus be increased several folds. The technology is based on highly efficient membrane-mediated CO2 transfer into turbulently moving cell suspensions. In combination with strong light and nutrient-enriched media, unprecedented volume- and area-based biomass productivities up to very high cell densities (≥ 30 g dw L-1) can be generated in this way. Features such as the avoidance of carbon and light limitation, disturbingly high oxygen concentrations, bubble flow-induced shear stress, negligible CO2 and water vapor losses to the atmosphere as well as the possibility of axenic cultivation make this system unique. Based on this technology, CellDEG has developed parallel screening and analysis platforms as well as bioreactors for the production of axenic biomass at laboratory scale. All cultivators offered can be connected to a central control unit and enable a convenient and time-saving workflow. These highly innovative cultivation systems are marketed primarily to research institutions and biomass producers who want to grow cyanobacteria and microalgae quickly, in parallel and reliably. CellDEG aims to establish a standardized highly efficient technology for photoautotrophic cultures that allows reproducibility of experimental approaches across laboratories. The associated sensor technology and analytics, as well as the transfer of the technology to the pilot plant scale, are also key areas of focus.

Pertinent project areas are identified by the CLIB team in conjunction with members in an iterative process. CLIB is a non-profit association, with its members shaping the cluster’s interests and activities. The cluster coordinates several associated programmes which cover different aspects of bioeconomy, and invites members to become involved, bring in their own ideas and to generate a real benefit for their companies or institutions. To this end, CLIB organises a number of events throughout the year: the annual CLIB international conference (CIC), forum events, topic-specific workshops, dedicated small partnering meetings and visits to partners, sites or meetings in Germany and abroad.

PROVIREX GmbH is a privately-held biotech company developing first-in-class advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs). PROVIREX is a spin-off of the Leibniz Institute for Virology (LIV) and is based in Hamburg, Germany. PROVIREX’s technology is based on error-free genome editing for eradication of life-threatening persistent virus infection. PROVIREX employs site-specific recombinase-based genome surgery technology to precisely excise chromosomally integrated viral genomes (proviruses). The major advantage of site-specific recombinases is that they function independently of host DNA repair. Therefore, in contrast to other gene editing technologies, they act with nucleotide precision producing completely error-free recombinants. The engineered recombinase Brec1 excises HIV-1 proviruses with high specificity from the genome of infected cells. PROVIREX’s proprietary Brec1 technology is currently entering clinical testing as first-in-human phase Ib/IIa clinical trials aiming to remove HIV-1 using gene editing of the peripheral blood (hematopoietic) stem cells of people living with HIV. PROVIREX has built GMP-compliant clean rooms at the tecHHub in Hamburg, which have also been approved by GenTSV as S3** laboratories and in which Brec1 technology will be administered as gene therapy in the future. In addition, PROVIREX will also offer CAR-T cancer therapy for people living with HIV, which is unique in Germany! PROVIREX is currently preparing its application for manufacturing authorization with the drug regulatory authority. PROVIREX is also researching ways to administer Brec1 technology more easily and directly, e.g. via LNPs. In another research project, PROVIREX is further developing another recombinase, this time to treat HTLV-1, a retrovirus closely related to HIV that causes an aggressive form of blood cancer and a progressive neurological disease.
