Handheld devices have gained popularity in many industries. Its primary objective is to take business applications and transaction processing, traditionally available in an office desktop environment, to the field services worker. This allows field workers to connect directly to business systems eliminating the need for paper-based batch and manual transactions. Through observation, we’ve realized that a mobile device that has to be carried around in a person’s hand, creates several practical and safety challenges for field personnel. The device has to be carried while not in use and then, when it is required to use the device, a person has to hold it in one hand while simultaneously executing the required tasks such as reading content, taking measurements, servicing equipment, attending to patients, taking stock, collecting electronic content, etc. In addition, the mobile device for transaction processing is often used in conjunction with a cell phone or radio as the primary communications device which exacerbates the problem. Furthermore, we realized that field personnel require a stable platform for streaming live video calls in order to collaborate with colleagues and service providers with the ability for everyone on the call to annotate and share content. After extensive research we concluded that a device which fulfils all the requirements we identified did not yet exist in the market and so, FIELDTECH was born. Over the past two years a team of hardware and software designers have developed a device that brings together the power of mobile computing, a rugged transformable enclosure and a set of software applications in a single product. This provides the field worker with practical solutions for mobile computing and communication. Collaborit is excited to showcase the patented FIELDTECH TechPlate, a device which we hope will have a major impact on how mobile devices are used in support of the accelerated rollout of Industry 4.0.
