Te Korowai O Waiheke
Te Korowai o Waiheke is a charitable trust established by our community to eradicate predators and restore our island song together.'Te Korowai o Waiheke’ is the culmination of many people’s vision to protect and restore the vulnerable native species (e.g. North Island kaka, grey-faced petrel, little blue penguin) that already call Waiheke home, in the first instance, by eradicating the key two predators remaining on the island, stoats and rats. Waiheke Island represents an unparalleled opportunity for predator eradication over a diverse landscape of communities and natural environments. It will have a far-reaching profile both within NZ and internationally, as Waiheke will become the world’s first predator free urban island. Our goal is ambitious but achievable, and will be made possible by the all-inclusive collaboration of groups and individuals on Waiheke and key project partners. The significant existing efforts of the Waiheke community to protect its native flora and fauna through many community stoat and rat control projects provides confidence that we can achieve this goal. Predator Free Waiheke is one of five projects nationally (and the only project from Auckland) selected for funding from Predator Free 2050 Limited

Raukūmara Pae Maunga Restoration Project
On the beautiful east coast of Aotearoa New Zealand, Raukūmara is the last remaining, large native forest ha) from ‘mountain to sea’ in the North Island. Raukūmara Pae Maunga is an iwi-led, nationally-significant conservation programme operating on a landscape scale, protecting hectares of native forest through innovative practices, research and deep community engagement. For tangata whenua (people of the land) Ngāti Porou and Te Whānau-ā-Apanui, this is no ordinary forest - here stands a living tupuna (ancestor), a source of mauri (life force) and the lifeblood of past, present and future generations. Sadly, decades of degradation from invasive species have devastated the forest and birdlife, destabilised the land and deposited silt in the waterways that flow to the ocean below. Together, the iwi are carrying out extensive and effective pest control (including the largest deer culling programme in the North Island), forest regeneration, native species protection, and deep community engagement. Five years in operation, Raukūmara Pae Maunga is delivering results: protecting unique ecosystems and forest habitat, building workforce pathways, supporting jobs, leading research, youth development, and investing in infrastructure across isolated communities. The programme represents not only the revival of one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s most neglected and degraded forest ranges, but also a pathway for intergenerational social, environmental, and economic transformation.
