Nrityakosh
Nrityakosh’, a belly dance school & production house based in Bangalore, was founded by the versatile belly dancer Debapriya Das. Nrityakosh has been at the forefront of the new age belly dance movement in Bangalore for the past several years. Over the past 5 years, Nrityakosh has curated and produced concepts’ with middle eastern folk dances, classical and modern oriental style, Indian and tribal fusion belly dance repertoire. Her concepts or dance themes put a method to the cacophony of emotions and energies, pick and customize elements from storytelling and oriental dance vocabulary to present a captivating show. Artists in Nrityakosh break, rather ‘shake’ the stereotypical notions and beliefs, inferiority complexes with our own body. They strongly preach and practice celebration of the body that we have been gifted with! Some of Nrityakosh’s notable works Safar-E-Raqs is a theatrical belly dance production which travels from the late 1790’s to the present day unravelling how the dance was adapted – to different cultures & different audiences. Safar-e-Raqs was a collaborative effort between Nrityakosh Dance Company and several independent belly dancers and theatre actors in Bangalore. The production opened in Bangalore on 21st January 2018 at the Alliance Francaise Auditorium. Papusza - The Rise And Fall Of Romani Poet is a dance production of the greatest Polish Roma poet of the same name. She was a path-breaking artist and tragic figure - where her own art led to her exile from her people, as literacy was considered unsuitable for women. The story of her life was presented on Nov 9th, 2019 at ADA Rangamandira Auditorium. The RaS Project – A collection of stories from the Ramayana explored the concept of the Bhava-Rasa theory from the Natyashastra through the language of modern-day belly dance. To help in exploring this concept several characters were chosen from the Ramayana and their journeys were narrated by the dancers and students of Nrityakosh.
