L’École accueille sa première promotion d’élèves en 1949. Chaque année 300 élèves sont intégrés à l'École d'enseignement technique de l'armée de l'Air et de l'Espace dite "EETAAE" située sur la base aérienne 722 à Saintes (17) et dont la devise est "Honneur, Travail, Discipline". Les élèves sont recrutés sur dossier à partir de la classe de seconde. Agés de 16 à 18 ans, ils sont appelés officiellement élèves techniciens (ET) mais généralement plus connus comme "Arpètes". La formation est dispensée sur une durée de deux années de scolarité où les élèves vivent en internat (classe de première et terminale). Les élèves peuvent choisir les filières suivantes - Baccalauréat général - Baccalauréat technologique STI2D - Baccalauréat professionnel C.I.EL - Baccalauréat professionnel aéronautique option avionique ou systèmes À la fin de leur scolarité, les élèves techniciens intègrent une école de spécialisation et débutent leur carrière de sous-officiers dans l'armée de l'Air et de l’Espace. Le 11 septembre 2020, l'armée de l'Air (AA) devient l'armée de l'Air et de l'Espace (AAE); l'EETAA change donc de nom le 30 juin 2021 et se nomme désormais l'EETAAE (Ecole d'enseignement technique de l'armée de l'Air et de l'Espace). L'EETAAE a formé à ce jour plus de 46 Arpètes.
