Atticus Education bridges the gap between technology and learning. Founded in 2012, it enables Lord Puttnam to deliver audio-visual seminars to students all over the world from his home in West Cork. In recent years, distance learning has been poorly served by technology. When conceiving the idea for Atticus Education, Lord Puttnam felt that mentoring - one of the core building blocks of learning and predominantly a physical concept - was difficult to reconstruct in an online format. To meet this challenge, he set out to advance the possibility of mentorship using technology enabling students not just to listen, but to engage, watch, converse, argue and reflect with both with himself and one another. As a result, Atticus Education offers far more than an online lecture programme: it allows illustrated conversations to take place, offering anyone seeking a career in the audio-visual world a connection with one of the industry’s most thoughtful exponents. When the idea for Atticus Education was devised in 2012, Lord Puttnam set himself the most difficult technological challenge he could think of: to teach a class in Brisbane, south-western Australia from Skibbereen, in rural West Cork. Today, after a great deal of work and research, video communication between Lord Puttnam’s base in west Cork and universities around the globe is facilitated using a Cisco TelePresence high definition video conferencing solution. This state-of- the-art connectivity allows for high speed uncontested internet access using BT fibre and a BT managed radio network; effectively extending that network into rural areas such as Skibbereen. These technological solutions mean that Lord Puttnam can teach in an innovative and dynamic manner, using video clips, audio files and interacting with students in a two-way discourse throughout each seminar.

In November 2011 we launched WordsWorthLearning© a unique online literacy programme for resolving reading and spelling problems, including dyslexia. It is WEB based (not an APP!) that runs in the PC/Tablet browser (e.g. safari, chrome, IE, firefox). It is a replica of a very successful Speech & Language Therapy service that, over the last 25 years, has only been available through 1:1 private consultancy. It is for age ranges from 6 years to adult and it offers a very affordable opportunity for a schoolchild to learn to "read & spell" competently in the English language. It has results-based evidence for improving reading and spelling skills in as little as 16 weeks. It is being used successfully by parents, teachers and other educational professionals. Mainstream schools are now introducing WordsWorthLearning© as part of their literacy strategy. The Move2B Project uses sport as an agent for change to empower girls across Ireland. Our aim is to retain teenage girls already involved in sports and support girls that have dropped out to re-engage with sports and physical activity. Our mission and goal is for teenage girls to have enough resources and evidence-based information to help them work with their bodies and discover their athletic and personal potential. Research shows that girls who continue with exercise throughout their teens do better not only academically, but socially and emotionally with the benefits echoing long after their school days. The Move2B e-learning programme is delivered by Niamh and Órna in three 40 minute modules. Each module has a mixture of video content and extension activities. The aim of the videos is to highlight the different barriers to physical activity that the girls may experience. We provide the girls with resources and evidence-based information to help them work with their bodies and discover their athletic and personal potential. Throughout the programme we encourage participation at all levels and broaden the definition of ‘sport’. We connect with the girls through our videos by sharing different experiences and perspectives with them. Supportive interactive activities and reflective questions are presented to the girls throughout the modules. Our aim is to ensure that the girls believe that physical activity and sport have a place for them and their friends.
