Phoenix Charter Academy Network
The Phoenix Charter Academy Network comprises three free, open-enrollment, college preparatory public high schools in Massachusetts. Phoenix’s mission is to challenge resilient, disconnected students with rigorous academics and relentless support, so they take ownership of their futures and succeed in high school, college, and as self-sufficient adults. Since opening its doors in 2006 to serve 75 students in Chelsea, the Phoenix community has expanded to include the cities of Lawrence and Springfield, now serving over 500 students each year. Among the key features of the Phoenix model are: competency based learning, restorative justice practices, positive youth development practices, dual-enrollment college programming, flexible scheduling, on-site day care centers for parenting students and staff, and a low student : teacher ratio. Unlike most "alternative" schools that place primary focus on student support often at the expense of rigorous academics, Phoenix schools aim to get all students to reach proficiency on the MCAS, graduate from high school, and succeed in college or a career pathway of their choice. The Phoenix model breaks the mold, and our results reflect this. The Phoenix Charter Academy Network strives to be an anti-racist organization, and it is proud of the investment it has made in the people and spaces necessary to make progress in this way.
