Some of us had incredible luck in life in being able to pay the entry fees to attend universities and business schools around the world. Most people don't. So. No big budget. No trendy tech stack. Just people, purpose, and a belief that knowledge should move as fast as innovation — and reach those who need it most. And armed with an amazing bunch of phenomenal experts and friends who contributed their time. We didn’t set out to build one of the largest online academies focused on territorial development, entrepreneurship and upskilling. But slowly, city by city, country by country, something unexpected happened. A mayor in a small African town used one of our courses to design a new strategy for youth employment. A young entrepreneur in a Latin American city used our tools to turn a small food stand into a growing business. A young lady in Afghanistan found the hope to keep going on her journey to have a better life. Civil servants in Eastern Europe learned how to navigate digital transformation with confidence. And now — almost 5 years later — we’re active in 455 cities across 29 countries. We still don’t have flashy campaigns or billion-dollar backing. We still don't do any social media. What we do have is a tribe: Of learners who are hungry to make a difference Of cities that are embracing change Of people who believe innovation should serve everyone, not just the few This isn’t about vanity metrics. It’s about showing that if you stay true to your mission — and if you put humans at the center of your work — the impact will follow. We're just getting started. The term therefore includes seismic surveying, exploration (drilling) and production. The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences Schools Enrichment Centre (AIMSSEC) is a not-for-profit organisation providing professional development courses for mathematics teachers, subject advisers and field trainers in South Africa, introducing new mathematics teaching skills, improving subject knowledge and empowering teachers from disadvantaged rural and township communities. AIMSSEC runs courses for primary and secondary teachers, subject advisers and field trainers from all over South Africa. These blended learning courses combine residential units, home-study, regularly marked assignments, online learning and TV broadcasts and examinations for qualifications awarded by AIMS in partnership with North West University. Learning is through guided discovery, with an emphasis on understanding, mathematical thinking, discussion, collaborative learning and challenges rather than just mechanical practice. Learning how to learn and to take responsibility for one’s own learning is of paramount importance. A distinguished team of more than 55 international mathematics education experts volunteer on the residential courses and support local staff and students after the courses. Graduates also contribute to the courses by becoming teaching assistants on the new courses. For their part, the teachers who attend our courses must train other teachers, creating a cascade model which ensures our work is far reaching. Background of our model. Hay McBer, looked at government- and NGO-funded projects teaching achievement motivation in 55 countries. The results? 32% more jobs, 100% more invested capital. And it wasn't a matter of a few succeeding by exploiting the many; rather, the entire pie got bigger-new resources were developed. Lech Walesa was a graduate of one of these programs-and his Solidarity movement took power in Poland. One of the wonderful things, from a government standpoint, is that these trainings pay for themselves many times over. In one controlled study of a $287,500 training program for 100 executives, those who went through the training created enough extra wealth to pay $362,300 back in new taxes after one year, and nearly twice that the second year, for a total of $1,067,300 in taxes over two years. This worked out to an ROI of 271%, a payback period of less than 10 months, and a net profit of $779,800. In South Africa there are also very positive results where the program was presented. Prof Adre Boshoff took it to BMW and the productivity and quality increased with 20 %. Dr Ewoud Malan took it to Sanlam Westrand and they had dramatic increases in their turnover.
