Praectice

PrAEctiCe is a Horizon Europe project funded by the European Commission. PrAEctiCe will provide a novel Agroecology indicator set for East Africa, aimed at helping smallholder farmers in their agroecological transition. The project goes beyond the existing indicator frameworks by putting the “concept into action” with a decision support tool for Agroecology advisors supporting the selection of the best-suited combination of agroecological farming practices in a local context. In addition, it puts a focus on circular water-energy-nutrient systems of integrated aqua-agriculture, an agroecological practice with high potential for efficient farming with minimal climate impacts, which has not been sufficiently explored in previous indicator work.

Women Income Network

Women Income Network is a community-based organization in Uganda that aims to promote financial independence for rural women by diversifying their employment opportunities through climate-smart agricultural technologies. We provide training, parental seed stock, infrastructure establishment support, and market linkages to vulnerable rural women on modern maggot farming approaches employing vertical and backyard farming systems. Our maggot farming approach is not only a sustainable source of income for rural women but also provides high-quality protein feed for poultry and livestock. The market price of maggot protein concentrates is 49% cheaper than an alternative silverfish meal on the Ugandan animal feed market. Additionally, the eco-friendly breeding process of maggots generates high-quality, odorless organic manure as a byproduct from bio-waste, which is an additional product of economic value that can generate extra income for our beneficiary group. Our mission is to empower rural women through sustainable maggot farming, providing them with the necessary skills and resources to become financially independent and improve their livelihoods.

Tomosi’s Farm Bwesharire Ltd is a second generating business entity dealing in breeding, raising and keeping cattle for milk production for Ugandans and world over. It has History as a family holding started by the late Mr. Tomosi and Mrs. Erina Rwabogo who had 30 Ankole cows in 1964. Since then progress has been made and its has expanded to 130 heads of cattle mostly Friesians mixed with few hybrid on 1100 acres of land. The farm is a winner of DDA premium quality award for best milk collection centre 2012 and first running up 2013. It has additional two milk collection centres at Rwobusisi and Kashagama. The farm employs 45 people. Out of the 45 employees, 5 are professional staff made up of a Veterinary Doctor, Quality Controller, Cattle Manager, Feed Stock Assistant and an Account Assistant. It generates monthly revenue of Ugx 150 million.
