Khartoumap
Although hundreds of routes run daily serving over 70% transit-dependent residents, very little to no information exists about Khartoum’s public transit system, not even an official system map. The KhartouMap initiative aims to improve the quality and quantity of information available about the public transit system in Khartoum. Starting with the data collection and processing of transit route data to generate digital and physical system maps, and working with the local government and transport authorities to create the country’s first GTFS. Simultaneous with the system mapping effort, a core part of KhartouMap is to conduct the country’s largest mobility survey, with the aim of collecting detailed information about origins and destinations on the mapped transit routes, personal travel behavior, and transit accessibility. All the route mapping and mobility survey data collected through this project will be made publicly available and introduced to the public in a series of events and hackathons planned for early 2023 to build local capacities and spur innovation in transit-tech solutions. We see KhartouMap as an ambitious mobility project with significant cultural and practical relevance in the everyday lives of Sudanese people that’s going to put Khartoum, Sudan on the map - literally and figuratively!
